PUERTO RICO – Stony Brook women’s basketball forward Nairimar Vargas-Reyes has been selected to represent her native Puerto Rico on its 3×3 Women’s National Basketball Team. Vargas-Reyes and the FBPUR 3×3 National Team is set to compete in the FIBA 3×3 Nations League in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from August 13-19.
“I’m so excited for Nairi’s opportunity to represent her country and Stony Brook. This experience is one that not many athletes get to have and I know she will take full advantage of every moment,” said Seawolves’ head coach Ashley Langford.
Vargas-Reyes has been a spark plug for the Seawolves over her two seasons on Long Island. Last season, she averaged 5.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in 23 games. Vergas-Reyes ranked second on the team in rebounding and ninth overall in the conference. She pulled down a career-high 14 boards in Stony Brook’s win over Penn on December 10.
The forward recorded her first career double-double against St. Francis Brooklyn on November 28, as she tallied 13 points and 13 rebounds. Over the course of the season, she shot an efficient 41.8 percent from the field (41-98) which was a career-best.
The FIBA 3×3 Nations League 2022 features a record 57 different national federations and 11 different conferences. Puerto Rico will play in the Americas conference and is joined by Argentina, Chile, Dominican Republic, USA, and Venezuela.
Puerto Rico opens up pool play on Saturday, August 13, as it goes head-to-head with team USA. Team Puerto Rico is in Pool B along with Chile and the USA.
